Research in Educational Leadership
School leaders must be able to conduct and understand research in order to make informed decisions that improve teaching, learning, and school culture. Research allows leaders to analyze real problems, collect data, and develop solutions based on evidence instead of opinions. Throughout the program, I learned that effective leadership requires the ability to study current challenges in education and use research to guide change.
The artifacts included in this section come from EDUC 502 – Research Methods and EDUC 688 – Capstone Research, where I completed a full research study about teacher retention and leadership support. The purpose of my study was to examine how leadership practices, professional development, and classroom management influence teacher motivation and retention at the middle school level. The research used surveys, interviews, and archival data to understand how teachers experience leadership support and how that support affects school culture. The findings showed that teachers value consistent communication, practical professional development, and visible leadership involvement, and that these factors can improve retention and job satisfaction.
Before conducting the study, I completed the research proposal and obtained IRB approval to make sure the project followed ethical guidelines and protected participants’ confidentiality. This process helped me understand the importance of responsible research and the role of ethical leadership when working with school staff and data. After completing the study, I presented my results through a research article and poster presentation, which allowed me to communicate my findings clearly and connect them to real leadership practices. This experience showed me that educational leaders must not only understand research, but also use it to make decisions that support teachers, improve school culture, and promote student success.

Connection to PSEL Standards
PSEL Standard 10: School Improvement
This section connects to Standard 10 because research is essential for continuous school improvement. The study required analyzing data, identifying problems, and developing recommendations to improve teacher retention and school culture.
PSEL Standard 6: Professional Capacity of School Personnel
My research focused on teacher support, professional development, and leadership practices. These areas relate directly to building the professional capacity of teachers and helping staff grow.
PSEL Standard 2: Ethics and Professional Norms
Completing the IRB process showed the importance of ethical leadership. School leaders must protect confidentiality, follow procedures, and make responsible decisions when working with data and people.
PSEL Standard 1: Mission, Vision, and Core Values
Research helps leaders make decisions that align with the mission and goals of the school. This study focused on improving school culture and supporting teachers so that students can succeed.
