Instructional Program Evaluation and Alignment

School leaders must ensure that instructional programs are effective, aligned with the school mission, and responsive to student needs. Evaluating a program is not only about reviewing materials, but about analyzing how the program impacts teaching, student learning, and long-term school goals. Effective leaders use data, teacher feedback, and strategic planning to determine whether a program supports the vision of the school and improves student achievement.

The artifact included in this section comes from EDUC 671 – Supervision and Evaluation of Instructional Programs, where I conducted a full evaluation of the Savvas Mathematics Program currently used at Hampton Middle School. The purpose of this evaluation was to examine how the program aligns with the school’s Continuous Improvement Plan, supports Tier 1 instruction, and contributes to student achievement. The evaluation included program documentation, stakeholder feedback, instructional observations, and analysis of how the curriculum is implemented in real classrooms.

Through this assignment, I learned that selecting a program is only the first step. Real improvement happens during implementation. In my evaluation, I found that Savvas is aligned with standards and provides strong instructional structure, but teachers need continuous training, collaboration, and leadership support to use the program effectively. This experience helped me understand that program evaluation must include equity, teacher capacity, and student outcomes. As a future school leader, I believe programs should always be reviewed through the lens of the school mission, the strategic plan, and the needs of all students, especially in Title I settings where additional support may be necessary.

Connection to PSEL Standards

PSEL Standard 4: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
This section connects to Standard 4 because leaders must evaluate instructional programs to ensure they support high-quality teaching and student learning. The Savvas evaluation required analyzing curriculum alignment, instructional practices, and student performance data.

PSEL Standard 1: Mission, Vision, and Core Values
Program evaluation must reflect the goals of the school. In this assignment, I examined how the mathematics program aligns with the school’s Continuous Improvement Plan and commitment to academic growth for all students.

PSEL Standard 9: Operations and Management
Instructional programs require planning, monitoring, and support from leadership. This work showed that leaders must provide professional development, feedback, and resources so that programs are implemented effectively.

PSEL Standard 3: Equity and Cultural Responsiveness
This evaluation also considered whether all students have access to rigorous instruction. In a Title I school, leaders must ensure that programs include differentiation and support so that every student can succeed.
